On the strength of 15 years' research and drawing on nine patents and nine publications, the Bee Lab™ is a cutting-edge scientific research platform. Coordinated by Doctor Frédéric Bonté, it is dedicated to identifying, selecting, analysing and blending the products from the hive that are most effective at repairing the visible signs of ageing. Across millennia, the Black Bee, with a gene pool over a million years old, has succeeded in adapting to its environment thanks to its unique morphological characteristics, including its dark colour and resilience. These attributes allow it to produce honeys of the highest quality. Currently endangered, just a few of the world’s colonies survive which Guerlain research has managed to identify.

HONEY FROM OUESSANT ISLAND, BRITTANY, FRANCE
Just 18 km off the coast of Brittany, Ouessant Island, a UNESCO reserve, is a remote ecosystem. Endemic to the island, the Black Bee produces honey with exceptional properties benefiting from an abundance of amino acids, polyphenols and trace elements. Guerlain research has demonstrated that this honey helps to stimulate a marker of skin renewal by 50%¹.

HONEY FROM CONNEMARA LANDS, IRELAND
On the West coast of Ireland, in remote, mountainous regions, Guerlain selected a repairing Black Bee honey with exceptional anti-ageing powers. This honey helps to increase natural hyaluronic acid production in the skin cells by 96%¹.

HONEY FROM THE WILD FORESTS OF TRØGSTAD, NORWAY
Deep within the wild forests of Norway lies a remote area home to the precious Black Bee whose honey has been selected by Guerlain for its restorative powers. This honey helps to stimulate an anti-ageing marker of repair in the skin cells by 87%¹.

EXCLUSIVE ROYAL JELLY
Produced in very little quantities, royal jelly is the hive’s rarest and most precious substance able to transform an ordinary bee into a queen with exceptional vitality. To guarantee the high quality and traceability of its royal jelly, Guerlain has developed its own exclusive channels in France. This royal jelly is a natural source of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and vitamins.

Honey is formed by the alchemy between flowers and bees, which humans are unable to reproduce. It all begins with nectar, a precious liquid offered by flowers. The bees gather it with care and store it in their stomach. Back at the hive, this nectar is enriched with enzymes by other bees and deposited in alveoli to be dehydrated by the beating of their wings. Once thickened, the nectar becomes the honey that we know, sealed with wax to preserve it.
Renowned since Antiquity, honeys' efficacy has continued to intrigue the medical profession, proving its repairing efficacy on the most stubborn wounds. This has enthralled Guerlain researchers since 2010. On this path to knowledge, there would be a decisive encounter with a french renowned surgeon, a pioneer in honey-based healing methods. Guerlain Research's intuition was thus confirmed.
Once identified, the most precious honeys follow a precise purification and stabilisation process, with microbiological control guaranteeing optimal stability. Several successive filtrations then allow them to be incorporated into our skincare. Finally, they are brought together and combined in skincare technologies to optimise their benefits for skin.

A PRESERVED SPECIES
Off the coast of France, Ouessant Island is a natural reserve where a pure and preserved species, the Black Bee lives. It produces a honey with exceptional properties. To preserve this precious bee, Guerlain is the patron of the Brittany Black Bee Conservation Association, which ensures its development and protection.
WOMEN FOR BEES
Launched in 2020 with UNESCO and recently with local benchmark NGOs, this programme aims to train women from all over the world in beekeeping, promoting their empowerment through a long-term professional activity that contributes to bee conservation.
BEE SCHOOLS
In 2018, we created the Bee School, a vast awareness-raising programme among primary school pupils. By reaching younger generations, we believe that a deep and lasting change can occur.

BIODIVERSITY
In 2021, Guerlain became one of the first luxury Houses to become a member of the UEBT (Union for Ethical BioTrade) and initiated a verification process for each of its fifty emblematic natural ingredient chains, such as honeys, orchids and Guerlinade fragrance materials.
